Analysis of Night Market Spatial Organisation and Lighting Design in Onitsha, Anambra State

Night markets represent a distinct spatial phenomenon in Nigerian urban commerce, generating unique design challenges related to artificial lighting, safety, informal spatial organisation, and the management of a high-density transient user population in conditions of limited formal planning oversight. This study analyses the spatial organisation and lighting design conditions of three night markets in Onitsha, Anambra State: the Bridge Head Night Market, the Relief Market Night Extension, and the Ochanja Night Trading Area. Field data collection during active evening trading periods included spatial mapping of trading stall arrangements, pathway widths, and circulation patterns; measurement of illuminance levels at fifty points per market using a calibrated lux meter; photographic documentation of lighting source types, mounting heights, and coverage patterns; and interviews with forty-five traders and thirty shoppers regarding safety, navigation, and lighting adequacy. Results show illuminance levels well below the recommended fifty lux minimum for outdoor commercial spaces in all three markets, with average illuminances of 9, 14, and 22 lux respectively. The spatial organisation of each market is highly adaptive, with temporary stall configurations responding to nightly demand patterns in ways that conventional planning could not anticipate. Pathway widths fall below fire safety minimums during peak occupancy in all three markets. Shoppers identified poor lighting as the primary safety concern, with forty-seven percent of surveyed shoppers reporting a theft or personal safety incident attributed to inadequate lighting. The study recommends solar-powered street lighting upgrades as a priority infrastructure investment for Onitsha night markets, combined with pathway width regulation during market set-up.
