Analytical Assessment of Inter-Cooperative Collaboration and Its Effects on Collective Marketing Efficiency in Niger Delta Region

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Collective marketing through inter-cooperative collaboration can reduce transaction costs, improve bargaining power, and enable smallholder producers to access high-value markets that individual cooperatives cannot reach alone. This study analytically assessed the effect of inter-cooperative collaboration on collective marketing efficiency in agricultural cooperative societies in the Niger Delta region, focusing on Rivers, Delta, and Edo States. A comparative analytical design was employed, sampling 35 cooperatives with formal inter-cooperative collaboration arrangements and 35 non-collaborating cooperatives matched on size, commodity type, and years of operation from the three states. Collective marketing efficiency was measured through price premium achieved above local market prices, volume sold collectively, and marketing cost per unit. Paired comparison and propensity score matching regression were applied. Results showed that collaborating cooperatives achieved a price premium averaging 18.7 percent above local market prices, compared to 7.2 percent for non-collaborating cooperatives (p < 0.001). Collective volume sold was 3.4 times higher in collaborating cooperatives. Marketing cost per unit was 24.6 percent lower in collaborating cooperatives. Trust between cooperatives was the most cited success factor by collaboration coordinators. Commodity perishability and transport logistics were the most common collaboration barriers. The study provides analytical evidence on inter-cooperative collaboration benefits in the Niger Delta and recommends a formal Niger Delta Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Consortium, facilitated by the state cooperative federations.
