Empirical Study of the Influence of Cooperative Culture on Cooperative Society Performance in Kogi State

Cooperative culture, encompassing the shared values, norms, and behavioural expectations that guide member and leadership conduct within a cooperative, is theorised as a mediating factor between governance structures and performance outcomes. This study empirically investigated the influence of cooperative culture on cooperative society performance in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria. A quantitative survey design was adopted, with 280 cooperative members and leaders from forty cooperatives in Lokoja, Kabba-Bunu, and Dekina LGAs responding to structured questionnaires. Cooperative culture was operationalised through seven cultural dimensions: member solidarity, democratic norm internalisation, transparency expectation, reciprocity behaviour, education commitment, financial discipline, and community service orientation. Performance was assessed through a multi-dimensional index covering financial results, governance, member service, and growth indicators. Structural equation modelling was employed to examine direct and indirect cultural-performance pathways. Results confirmed that cooperative culture had a strong direct effect on cooperative performance (standardised path coefficient 0.63; p < 0.001). Democratic norm internalisation and financial discipline were the strongest individual cultural predictors of performance. The financial discipline cultural dimension mediated 34.7 percent of the governance quality-performance relationship. Length of cooperative membership significantly strengthened all cultural dimensions. The study fills an empirical gap in cooperative culture-performance research specific to the North Central zone and recommends cultural development as a conscious investment priority in cooperative organisation development programmes alongside structural governance reforms.
