📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Nollywood's global reach across Africa, the African diaspora, and increasingly mainstream Western audiences represents a significant dimension of Nigerian soft power, and analytical examination of the mechanisms through which cinema translates into cultural influence provides important insight for creative diplomacy and arts policy. This study analytically assessed Nollywood's contribution to Nigerian soft power across three dimensions: diaspora cultural connection maintenance, African continental cultural influence, and mainstream international market penetration, using 2019 to 2023 as the study period. A mixed-method design was employed, combining quantitative analysis of streaming platform audience data (from available Netflix Nigeria and Amazon Prime reports), documentary analysis of international distribution records, and structured interviews with 15 film producers, 8 international film critics, and 6 Nigerian diplomatic cultural attachés in London, New York, and Nairobi. Results showed accelerating Nollywood global reach, with Netflix Nigeria content achieving documented viewership across 40 countries. African continental distribution through free-to-air satellite channels was identified as generating the broadest audience reach at lower commercial returns. Cultural diplomacy value through emotional connection among diaspora audiences was confirmed as qualitatively significant by diplomatic respondents in all three cities. However, systematic integration of Nollywood's reach into formal Nigerian cultural diplomacy programming was absent. The study concludes that Nollywood is an underutilised soft power asset and recommends formal cultural diplomacy partnerships between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Film Corporation, and streaming platforms.
