Coastal zone management in Nigeria requires robust spatial data infrastructure to support evidence-based decision making on resource allocation, land use planning, and hazard mitigation. This study examines the current application and institutional capacity for geographic information systems in coastal zone management in Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria, a state with over 120 kilometres of Atlantic coastline subject to erosion, flooding, and petroleum industry pressures. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach comprising review of existing spatial datasets held by the Akwa Ibom State Geographic Information Service, structured questionnaires administered to 60 professionals in relevant government ministries and agencies, and workshops with key coastal management stakeholders. Technical assessment examines the currency, resolution, and completeness of existing GIS datasets covering land use, mangrove cover, bathymetry, coastal infrastructure, and hazard zones. The adequacy of GIS software, hardware, and human resource capacity in implementing agencies is evaluated against international coastal GIS standards. Findings are expected to reveal fragmented data holdings, limited interoperability between agency platforms, and a significant skills gap among planning officers. The study proposes a state-level coastal GIS integration framework with standardised data sharing protocols and recommends a capacity building programme for coastal planners in the Ministry of Lands and Water Resources.
