Assessing the Quality of Product Design Communication in Nigerian Industrial Design Graduate Portfolios

Professional portfolios are the primary instrument through which industrial design graduates communicate their design thinking capability, technical competence, and creative vision to prospective employers and clients. The quality of product design communication in portfolios submitted by Nigerian industrial design graduates, however, has not been systematically evaluated, limiting the capacity of academic departments to benchmark output standards or identify communication skills gaps. This study assesses the product design communication quality of one hundred and forty-four portfolios submitted by final-year undergraduate and postgraduate industrial design students across six Nigerian universities. A portfolio assessment instrument is developed through expert panel validation, comprising twenty-two criteria across four domains: ideation documentation, technical drawing quality, model photography and rendering, and narrative clarity of design rationale. Two trained assessors independently rate each portfolio, with inter-rater reliability confirmed at an acceptable Kappa coefficient. Findings reveal significant variation in portfolio quality both within and between institutions. Technical drawing quality and design rationale narrative are the weakest performing domains across the sample, with fewer than thirty percent of portfolios rated as adequate or above on these criteria. Ideation documentation shows the greatest inter-institutional variability, reflecting differences in studio pedagogy rather than student ability. The study recommends a National Industrial Design Portfolio Standards Guide and the introduction of a peer portfolio critique module as a compulsory component of final-year studio programmes across Nigerian universities.
