Assessment of Quality Standards Compliance in the Nigerian Nonwoven Fabric Manufacturing Sector

Nonwoven fabrics produced in Nigeria serve diverse end-use markets including disposable hygiene products, agricultural mulch films, filtration media, and healthcare consumables, each requiring specific performance standards for safe and effective use. This study assesses quality standards compliance in the nonwoven fabric manufacturing sector across production facilities in Lagos and Ogun states, South West Nigeria. Standards compliance was evaluated for five manufacturers producing spunbond, meltblown, and needle-punched nonwoven products through document review of quality management records, product test data, and Standards Organisation of Nigeria registration status. Independent laboratory testing of production samples was conducted for relevant performance parameters including mass per unit area tolerance, tensile strength, elongation, breaking force, pore size, and liquid penetration resistance as applicable to product categories. Compliance assessment was benchmarked against both domestic Standards Organisation of Nigeria standards and relevant ISO standards for nonwoven fabrics. Results reveal that only two of five manufacturers maintained current Standards Organisation of Nigeria product registration for their primary product categories. Independent testing identified mass per unit area non-compliance in 35 percent of sampled products, typically with underweight production relative to declared specifications. Hygiene-grade nonwoven products intended for single-use medical applications lacked documented sterility assurance procedures in three facilities. The study recommends mandatory Standards Organisation of Nigeria product registration renewal cycles, enhanced market surveillance testing programmes, and technical capacity development for quality management personnel in the Nigerian nonwoven sector.
