📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Nigerian entrepreneurs seeking to establish or expand commercial relationships with Chinese suppliers, manufacturers, and investors face distinctive challenges of cultural distance, communication barriers, and unfamiliar business relationship conventions. This study examines the professional strategies and networking approaches adopted by Nigerian entrepreneurs who have successfully built sustainable business relationships with Chinese counterparts. A professional case study design was adopted, with in-depth interviews conducted with 35 Nigerian entrepreneurs from Lagos, Kano, and Abuja who have maintained active commercial relationships with Chinese businesses for at least three years. Findings indicate that successful Sino-Nigerian business network builders share several strategic orientations: personal investment in basic Mandarin language competency, participation in Chinese trade fairs including the Canton Fair, leveraging Nigerian returnee students from China as initial contacts, and patience with the relationship-building phase before transactional engagement. Digital platforms, particularly WeChat and Alibaba, are identified as primary discovery and communication channels. Trust is established through consistent follow-through on small initial transactions before larger commitments are made. The study concludes that Nigerian entrepreneurs require structured preparation combining basic Mandarin, Chinese business culture orientation, and knowledge of Chinese digital commerce platforms. A Nigeria-China Business Bridge programme offering practical relationship-building training is recommended under the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission.
