Community Policing and Crime Prevention in Ogun State

This study assesses the implementation and effectiveness of community policing initiatives in Ogun State as a strategy for crime prevention and security governance at the grassroots level. Community policing has gained increasing attention in Nigeria as a complement to conventional law enforcement, particularly in the context of rising crime rates and the limited capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to provide adequate coverage in peri-urban and rural areas. Using a mixed-methods design, the study combines structured surveys of 280 residents across four local government areas in Ogun State with interviews with police divisional officers, community vigilante leaders, and local government security advisers. The community policing theory and the problem-oriented policing framework are applied to evaluate the design and outcomes of community security partnerships. Findings indicate that community policing initiatives in Ogun State have had a positive but inconsistent impact on crime prevention, with outcomes varying significantly across communities based on the strength of local trust networks, funding consistency, and the quality of coordination between formal police and informal security actors. The South West geopolitical context, with its rapid urbanisation and expanding informal settlements in the Lagos-Ibadan corridor, creates particular demands for community-level security governance. Recommendations include formalising community policing through legal frameworks, establishing transparent oversight mechanisms for community security groups, and ensuring regular joint training between police officers and community security volunteers.
