📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Member disengagement is one of the most significant challenges facing thrift cooperative societies in Rivers State, where competition from mobile money platforms and fintech savings products has made it easier for urban members to save outside the cooperative structure. This study designed a practical membership engagement strategy for thrift cooperative societies in Rivers State, South South Nigeria, drawing on practice-based evidence from the sector. A strategy development methodology incorporating a membership engagement audit, focus group discussions, competitive landscape analysis, and expert co-design was employed. The audit assessed engagement levels in twenty thrift cooperatives in Port Harcourt, Obio-Akpor, and Oyigbo LGAs through member attendance records, savings contribution rates, and survey-based engagement indicators. Focus group discussions with 48 members and 12 cooperative managers identified engagement drivers and barriers. The resulting membership engagement strategy encompasses six strategic pillars: value proposition clarification, personalised member communications, digital savings integration, members-only benefits programme, member recognition and rewards system, and improved meeting design. Key performance indicators for each pillar are specified. The strategy was validated in a pilot engagement campaign in three cooperatives over eight weeks, showing a 22 percent increase in meeting attendance and a 17 percent improvement in savings contribution regularity. Expert review by ten cooperative management and marketing specialists confirmed strategy feasibility. The study recommends the Rivers State Cooperative Federation adopt and promote the strategy across all affiliated thrift societies.
