Digital Marketing Communication Strategies for Small and Medium Enterprises in Lagos

This study examines the digital marketing communication strategies employed by small and medium enterprises in Lagos State, South West Nigeria, assessing strategic sophistication, implementation quality, and business outcomes. Lagos is Nigeria's commercial capital and hosts the largest concentration of SMEs in the country, many of which have adopted digital marketing as their primary promotion strategy in response to traditional advertising cost constraints. This study uses a mixed-method design combining structured interviews with 40 SME owners and marketing managers across product and service sectors in Ikeja, Victoria Island, and Surulere with audit analysis of their digital marketing presence including websites, social media accounts, and digital advertising. Marketing effectiveness indicators including follower growth, engagement rates, and self-reported customer acquisition are assessed. Findings reveal that social media-only digital marketing, without website or email strategy integration, is the dominant approach in 72 percent of sampled SMEs. Content quality is highly variable, with most SMEs producing promotional-only content that generates low organic engagement. Only 18 percent of sampled businesses use digital analytics tools to measure campaign performance. SMEs that combine content marketing with social media advertising report significantly higher customer acquisition from digital channels. Capacity gaps in content creation, SEO, and digital analytics are the most frequently cited digital marketing management challenges. The study concludes that SME digital marketing communication in Lagos is strategically underdeveloped despite high adoption rates. It recommends business development support services incorporating digital marketing capability training specifically designed for Nigerian SME contexts.
