Drug Trafficking and Nigeria’s International Cooperation with Interpol and Global Law Enforcement Agencies

This study investigates Nigeria's participation in international law enforcement cooperation mechanisms aimed at combating transnational drug trafficking, with particular focus on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency's (NDLEA) engagement with Interpol, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and bilateral partners. Nigeria occupies a significant position in global drug trafficking networks, serving both as a transit hub and as a country of origin and destination for illicit substances. Drawing on transnational organised crime theory and international policing cooperation frameworks, this research assesses the institutional arrangements, information-sharing protocols, and prosecution outcomes associated with Nigeria's international drug enforcement partnerships from 2020 to 2024. The study employs a qualitative methodology, drawing on NDLEA annual reports, UNODC West Africa reports, Interpol operational notices, and semi-structured interviews with NDLEA officials. The research examines cooperation across multiple trafficking routes, including the South West coastal zone, Abuja as a transit hub, and cross-border movement in the North West. Findings are expected to show that Nigeria has strengthened operational cooperation significantly under recent NDLEA leadership, though systemic issues of corruption, judicial delays, and asset recovery remain major weaknesses in the overall interdiction framework. Recommendations address institutional reforms and resource allocation for international drug enforcement cooperation.
