📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the relationship between electoral violence and democratic consolidation in Enugu State, with particular focus on the 2023 general elections. Electoral violence has remained a recurring impediment to Nigeria's democratic development, undermining the credibility of electoral outcomes and eroding public trust in democratic institutions. The study is anchored on the Conflict Theory as articulated by Ralf Dahrendorf, which posits that social conflict arises from structural inequalities and competition over scarce political resources. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study comprised registered voters, electoral officers, civil society actors, and security personnel in Enugu State. A sample of 350 respondents was drawn using stratified random sampling. The questionnaire served as the primary instrument of data collection, supplemented by in-depth interviews. Findings reveal that vote-buying, ballot snatching, and intimidation of voters were the predominant forms of electoral violence recorded during the 2023 elections, significantly affecting voter turnout particularly among women and youth. The study further finds that weak institutional capacity of the Independent National Electoral Commission and politicization of security agencies substantially weakened the state's response to election-related violence. It is concluded that the persistence of electoral violence undermines Enugu State's prospects for genuine democratic consolidation. The study recommends the strengthening of electoral institutions, independent prosecution of electoral offenders, and robust civic education programmes targeting vulnerable communities ahead of future elections.
