📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study evaluates the German language proficiency standards applicable to journalists and media professionals in Nigerian news organisations that cover German-speaking European affairs, with a focus on media organisations headquartered in Lagos and Abuja. The increasing globalisation of news production and the growing commercial and political significance of Nigeria-Germany relations have created demand for media professionals capable of accessing German-language information sources, conducting interviews with German-speaking sources, and reporting accurately on German-speaking country affairs. The study adopts a professional standards evaluation design, drawing on structured interviews with 25 journalists, editors, and bureau chiefs at selected Nigerian national newspapers, television stations, and digital news platforms. The interviews assess current German language use in news production, perceived professional value of German proficiency, and institutional support for language training. Documentary analysis of recent Nigeria-Germany coverage in selected outlets supplements the interview data. Findings indicate that German language proficiency among Nigerian media professionals is limited, with most journalists relying on English-language intermediary sources when covering German affairs. Several participants express professional interest in German language training but report no institutional provision or encouragement. The study recommends the inclusion of professional foreign language competency, including German, within journalism training curricula and continuing professional development programmes. Keywords: German language proficiency, media professionals, Nigerian journalism, Lagos, professional standards.
