Evaluation of Family Resource Management Education Programmes in Adult Literacy Centres in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria

Family resource management education equips adults with practical skills in budgeting, food management, and household planning that directly improve quality of life. Adult literacy centres represent accessible platforms for reaching low-income and less formally educated populations in Nigeria. This study evaluated family resource management education programmes at adult literacy centres in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. A descriptive evaluative design was employed, with 90 adult learners and 20 programme facilitators from 10 centres selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using programme assessment questionnaires, interview guides, and learner outcome assessments. Analysis involved descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation. Findings showed that learners who completed family resource management modules demonstrated significant improvements in budgeting practices, food purchasing decisions, and household waste reduction compared to pre-programme baselines. Facilitator qualifications were variable, with many relying on outdated instructional materials. Programme duration and frequency were insufficient in most centres. A positive correlation was found between programme attendance and self-reported improvements in household management. The study recommends curriculum revision to include digital financial literacy components, regular facilitator training, and increased government funding for adult education centres in Kwara State.
