📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Home Economics teachers are well positioned to influence the dietary knowledge, attitudes, and practices of secondary school students, particularly in regions where dietary transitions are accelerating. In Bauchi State, North East Nigeria, the rising prevalence of fast food consumption among adolescents underscores the need for effective school-based nutrition promotion. This study investigated the role of Home Economics teachers in promoting healthy eating habits among secondary school students in Bauchi State. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with 120 Home Economics teachers and 300 students selected from 20 secondary schools through stratified random sampling. Structured questionnaires assessed teacher activities, instructional approaches, and student healthy eating knowledge and behaviour. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. Findings showed that students in schools where Home Economics teachers actively integrated nutrition education into practical lessons reported significantly better healthy eating knowledge and behaviours. Most teachers reported challenges including lack of teaching aids, inadequate laboratory equipment, and time constraints in practical lesson delivery. Student dietary behaviour was also influenced by peer attitudes and family food culture. The study recommends sustained investment in Home Economics laboratory infrastructure, teacher capacity development, and the integration of school nutrition policies to create enabling environments for healthy eating promotion.
