📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Financial inclusion has emerged as a central policy priority in Nigeria's drive to broaden economic participation and improve household welfare, particularly in rural areas where access to formal financial services remains critically low. This study examines the relationship between financial inclusion and economic welfare among rural households in Ebonyi State from 2021 to 2024. The study is anchored on the Financial Development and Growth Theory, which posits that deepening access to financial services stimulates savings mobilization, productive investment, and risk-sharing mechanisms that improve household economic outcomes. A survey research design was adopted, targeting rural households across the state's six LGAs. From an estimated population of 80,000 rural households, a sample of 400 respondents was selected using multi-stage stratified sampling. Structured questionnaires and mobile money transaction data from the Central Bank of Nigeria served as instruments. Findings reveal that only 31 percent of rural households in surveyed communities possessed active bank accounts or mobile money wallets, confirming persistent financial exclusion. Households with access to financial services registered significantly higher food security scores, education expenditure, and income resilience during economic shocks than financially excluded households. Mobile money platforms showed the strongest correlation with welfare improvement among newly included households. The study concludes that financial inclusion is a statistically significant predictor of rural household welfare in Ebonyi State. It is recommended that the CBN and financial institutions intensify agent banking network expansion in Ebonyi's rural LGAs and simplify account opening requirements for low-income rural residents.
