Freirean Pedagogy, Conscientisation, and Community Development in Rural South East Nigeria: A Longitudinal Study

This longitudinal study examined the processes and outcomes of Freirean pedagogical interventions in community development contexts across three rural communities in Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi States, South East Nigeria, over a five-year observation period. Paulo Freire's pedagogy of conscientisation remains theoretically influential in African adult education discourse but empirically under-tested, particularly in longitudinal designs capable of tracking the sustained development of critical consciousness and its translation into community action. The study employed a participatory action research design in which the researcher served as co-facilitator alongside trained community educator teams. Generative theme circles, culture circles, and community problem codification exercises formed the core pedagogical interventions. Data were gathered through annual participant interviews, community observation journals, community development outcome documentation, and facilitator reflective records. Longitudinal findings demonstrated a progressive developmental trajectory from initial critical literacy acquisition through growing structural analysis capacity to organised community collective action across all three sites. The Enugu community generated a successful community-led water infrastructure advocacy campaign by Year 3, while Anambra and Ebonyi sites produced documented improvements in women's political participation and community health practice respectively. The study provides the most extensive longitudinal empirical documentation of Freirean pedagogy processes and outcomes in Nigerian adult education yet published. Original contributions include a culturally contextualised stage model of conscientisation development applicable to South East Nigerian community education contexts.
