German Language and Business Communication: Perceptions of Entrepreneurs in Aba, Abia State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study explores the perceptions of entrepreneurs in Aba, Abia State, South East Nigeria, regarding the potential value of German language skills in facilitating business communication and trade. Aba is widely recognised as one of Nigeria's most active manufacturing and commercial hubs, with a significant volume of trade conducted with European markets, including Germany. Despite this commercial context, the extent to which German language ability is perceived as a practical business asset by local entrepreneurs has not been empirically investigated. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 150 business owners and managers in Aba's main commercial districts. The questionnaire assessed awareness of Germany as a trading partner, attitudes towards foreign language learning, and willingness to invest in German language training for staff. Findings reveal that the majority of respondents recognise Germany's economic significance but lack awareness of how language proficiency could directly enhance trade relations. Willingness to support German language training is contingent primarily on perceived return on investment. The study recommends collaborative initiatives between the German Consulate, the Goethe-Institut, and Aba's major trade associations to promote the economic utility of German language skills. Keywords: German language, business communication, entrepreneurs, Aba, trade.
