📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the relationship between German language education and graduate employability among alumni of the German language programme at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, located in Kaduna State within the North West geopolitical zone. Given the rising concern about unemployment among arts and humanities graduates in Nigeria, this study seeks to determine whether a German language degree equips graduates with skills that are valued by employers in both public and private sectors. Using a descriptive research design, data were collected through questionnaires administered to 120 German language graduates who had completed their degree within the past five years and from 30 employers in various industries. The study examines perceived competencies, actual job placements, and the relevance of language skills to daily professional tasks. Findings reveal that German language graduates are employed across a range of sectors, including education, international trade, diplomacy, and translation services, though many report challenges in finding roles directly connected to their language training. Employer perceptions of German language graduates are generally positive, with intercultural communication and analytical skills highlighted as key attributes. The study recommends stronger university-industry collaboration and the incorporation of vocational and entrepreneurship modules into German language degree curricula. Keywords: graduate employability, German language, Ahmadu Bello University, arts education, labour market.
