Health Seeking Behaviour of Elderly Men Regarding Prostate Cancer in Ibadan, Oyo State

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Nigerian men, yet health-seeking behaviour for early detection remains poor, particularly among elderly men in South West Nigeria. This study examined health-seeking behaviour regarding prostate cancer among elderly men in Ibadan, Oyo State. A descriptive survey design was used, with 240 men aged 50 years and above selected from community centres and geriatric outreach clinics in Ibadan North West and Lagelu local government areas. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on awareness, attitudes, and health-seeking practices. Results showed that only 28 percent of respondents had ever undergone prostate-specific antigen testing, with the majority citing lack of awareness, fear of the diagnosis, and financial constraints as barriers. Cultural beliefs about prostate problems being untreatable and embarrassment associated with rectal examination also deterred health-seeking. Men who had received health education from community nurses were significantly more likely to have sought screening. The study recommended targeted health education campaigns specifically designed for elderly men through community settings, religious institutions, and primary healthcare centres.
