Impact of Digital Transformation on Secretarial Functions in Nigerian Financial Services: An Analytical Study

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study analytically examines the impact of digital transformation on secretarial functions in Nigerian financial services organisations, including banks, insurance companies, and capital market firms. Digital transformation, driven by cloud computing, artificial intelligence, robotic process automation, and mobile technology, is fundamentally reshaping how secretarial work is conceptualised and executed in corporate environments. The research employs a mixed-methods design, targeting executive assistants, administrative secretaries, and human resource directors in thirty financial services organisations across Lagos and Abuja. A validated digital transformation impact instrument is administered to 260 respondents, complemented by semi-structured interviews with fifteen senior HR managers. The Digital Transformation Theory and the Role Transition Model provide the theoretical framework, supported by literature from 2021 to 2024 on digital work transformation in Nigerian financial services. The study analyses changes in task composition, decision-making authority, and skill requirements for secretarial professionals. It also examines how digital transformation is creating new value-added roles alongside displacing routine tasks. Recommendations target the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria and the Central Bank of Nigeria. Keywords: digital transformation, secretarial functions, financial services, Nigeria, role transformation
