Management of Islamic Law Faculties in Nigerian Universities: Curriculum Relevance and Graduate Employability

Islamic law faculties in Nigerian universities face the dual challenge of maintaining doctrinal academic excellence while producing graduates with professional competencies relevant to the contemporary Nigerian legal market, judicial system, Islamic banking sector, and policy environment. This study examines the curriculum design, professional training content, and graduate employability outcomes of Islamic law programmes at five Nigerian universities with established Islamic law faculties: Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Bayero University Kano, University of Maiduguri, University of Ilorin, and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. A professional education management methodology is applied, reviewing programme curricula documents, NUC accreditation reports, and structured surveys of 150 Islamic law graduates and forty prospective employers in the judiciary, legal practice, banking, and public service. The study evaluates curriculum alignment with judicial service requirements, Islamic banking sector needs, and contemporary Islamic legal scholarship. Available professional legal education literature from Nigerian Islamic law contexts identifies outdated curriculum content, limited practical training, and inadequate Arabic language competency as the primary graduate preparation deficiencies. The NUC Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards for Law and the OIC-affiliated Islamic legal education quality frameworks provide the professional evaluation reference. Findings are expected to reveal a significant curriculum-market alignment gap. Recommendations address curriculum reform, mandatory judicial attachment programmes, Islamic finance modules, and Arabic language proficiency requirements in Islamic law degrees.
