📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The rapid expansion of China's economic presence in Nigeria has created complex diplomatic and commercial management challenges for Nigerian government officials tasked with overseeing the bilateral relationship. This study examines the strategic frameworks, knowledge competencies, and professional development needs of Nigerian diplomatic and trade officers managing Sino-Nigerian trade relations. A professional assessment design was adopted, with structured interviews conducted with 25 officers from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment, and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council who have direct experience managing aspects of the China-Nigeria trade portfolio. Participants were drawn from postings in Abuja and Lagos. The study identifies significant gaps in Mandarin language competency, Chinese cultural intelligence, and knowledge of Chinese trade regulations among Nigerian officers. Strategic frameworks for trade relationship management are largely improvised rather than systematically developed through institutional training. Only 34 percent of respondents had received any formal training in Chinese business culture or negotiation practices. The study concludes that Nigerian institutions responsible for managing the China bilateral relationship require a structured professional development programme covering Mandarin language basics, Chinese political economy, and cross-cultural negotiation. It recommends establishing a Sino-Nigerian Diplomatic Academy under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to build dedicated professional capacity for managing this strategically vital bilateral relationship.
