Non-Governmental Organizations and Rural Development in Plateau State: A Study of Jos North Local Government Area

This study examines the contributions of non-governmental organizations to rural development in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, situated in Nigeria's North Central geopolitical zone. The persistent failure of government agencies to meet development needs in rural and peri-urban communities has created significant space for civil society organizations and NGOs to intervene in areas such as health, education, women empowerment, and conflict resolution. This study adopts a descriptive research design with primary data collected from 30 operational NGOs and 150 community beneficiaries through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The Civil Society Theory and the Partnership Model of Development frame the research conceptually. Secondary data includes Plateau State government development reports, NGO annual activity reports, and recent academic literature on third sector development in Nigeria. Descriptive statistics and content analysis are employed in data analysis. The study evaluates NGO impact on community living standards, women participation, and conflict mitigation efforts in Jos North, a community affected by recurring ethno-religious tensions. Anticipated findings suggest that NGOs fill critical service delivery gaps but face challenges of sustainability, duplication of efforts, and limited government collaboration. Recommendations include formalization of NGO-local government partnership frameworks and establishment of a coordinating body to harmonize civil society development activities in Plateau State.
