Press Freedom and Democratic Governance in Edo State

This study examines the state of press freedom in Edo State and its relationship to the quality of democratic governance, with particular attention to incidents of journalist harassment, media ownership concentration, and self-censorship between 2019 and 2023. A free and independent press is widely regarded as a cornerstone of democratic accountability, yet Nigerian journalists frequently operate under conditions of institutional pressure, economic precarity, and physical threat. Using a qualitative research design, the study conducts in-depth interviews with 25 practising journalists, media editors, and representatives of press freedom organisations based in Benin City and other urban centres in Edo State. The watchdog theory of the press is applied to evaluate how structural constraints affect the capacity of media organisations to perform democratic accountability functions. Findings indicate that media ownership by politically connected businessmen creates significant conflicts of interest that compromise editorial independence, while government advertising dependencies further limit critical coverage of state institutions. Physical intimidation of journalists covering anti-government protests and investigative stories is also documented as a recurring pattern. The South South geopolitical context of Edo State adds complexity, given its contentious electoral history and the prominence of political violence in state politics. Recommendations include amendments to media ownership regulations, legal protections for investigative journalism, and the establishment of independent safety mechanisms for journalists covering high-risk assignments.
