Pricing Strategy and Revenue Optimization in Nigerian Private Universities

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the relationship between pricing strategy and revenue optimization in selected Nigerian private universities. The private university subsector has expanded significantly since 2019, with institutions competing for student enrollment amidst rising operational costs and fluctuating household income levels. The research employs a descriptive survey design targeting bursars, registrars, and academic planning officers of ten private universities licensed by the National Universities Commission across the South West, South East, and North Central zones. A total of 80 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Structured questionnaires and financial records were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Findings indicate that private universities employing value-based pricing strategies, anchored on program quality and graduate employability outcomes, demonstrate stronger revenue growth and enrollment stability than those relying on cost-based tuition setting. Scholarship-embedded pricing structures are found to attract high-performing students who positively influence institutional reputation metrics. The study also finds that flexible payment plan options improve completion rates and reduce revenue losses from student dropout. The research concludes that Nigerian private universities must adopt sophisticated pricing strategy frameworks that balance accessibility with revenue sustainability. Recommendations include annual pricing strategy reviews informed by student satisfaction and labor market outcome data.
