📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The pest control industry in Lagos State has expanded rapidly alongside urban population growth, with hundreds of registered and unregistered operators providing commercial pest management services to households, offices, and food establishments. However, professional standards in pesticide application, safety equipment use, and waste disposal are inadequately enforced. This study assesses insecticide use practices and occupational safety compliance among pest control operators in Lagos State. A stratified sample of 120 operators from both formal companies and informal freelance operators will be surveyed using structured interviews and direct observation of service delivery. Data will be collected on product selection, dose calculation, personal protective equipment usage, re-entry intervals communicated to clients, and disposal of empty containers. Compliance rates will be compared between registered company employees and informal operators using chi-square analysis. The study will also assess operator knowledge of active ingredient classes and resistance management principles. This research directly informs regulatory recommendations for the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) regarding professional certification requirements for pest control operators.
