Professional German Language Communication in Nigerian Diplomatic Missions: A PGD-Level Analysis

This study analyses the professional German language communication practices and training needs of staff at Nigerian diplomatic missions in German-speaking countries, with data collected through interviews and surveys conducted with current and former staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Berlin and the Consulate General in Frankfurt. Nigeria's diplomatic relationship with Germany encompasses trade, migration, academic cooperation, and security collaboration, and the volume and complexity of professional exchanges in these domains create significant German language demands for diplomatic staff. The study employs a descriptive research design, combining structured questionnaires administered to 40 embassy and consulate staff with in-depth interviews with six senior diplomatic officers. The questionnaire assesses German language proficiency levels, frequency of German use across professional domains, and perceived training adequacy. Findings indicate that German is used most frequently in informal liaison with local authorities, cultural events, and community engagement activities, while formal diplomatic correspondence remains primarily in English. A majority of staff rate their German proficiency as inadequate for demanding professional communication tasks. The study identifies pre-posting German language training, which is typically limited to a short intensive course, as insufficient and recommends that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs develop a structured, profession-specific German language training curriculum for diplomatic personnel.
