Stakeholder Management and Corporate Strategy Implementation in the Oil and Gas Sector in Delta State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the relationship between stakeholder management practices and corporate strategy implementation in oil and gas firms operating in Delta State, Nigeria. The South South geopolitical zone, particularly Delta State, remains at the center of Nigeria's petroleum industry, with community relations and stakeholder engagement posing persistent strategic challenges. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting corporate affairs managers, community liaison officers, and government relations executives of ten oil and gas companies operating in Warri, Ughelli, and Sapele. A sample of 85 respondents was selected using purposive sampling. Structured questionnaires and key informant interviews provided the primary data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation. Results indicate a strong positive relationship between proactive stakeholder engagement and the successful implementation of corporate development and community investment strategies. Firms that embed stakeholder mapping into their strategic planning cycles experience fewer project disruptions and higher community approval ratings. The study identifies inadequate community participation in strategy design as a recurring barrier to implementation success. The research concludes that oil and gas firms in Delta State must adopt participatory stakeholder management models as integral components of their corporate strategy frameworks. Keywords: stakeholder management, corporate strategy, oil and gas, Delta State, community engagement.
