Strategic Leadership and Employee Productivity in Public Sector Organizations in Abuja, FCT

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study assesses the influence of strategic leadership on employee productivity in selected public sector organizations in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. Strategic leadership has gained increasing relevance in the Nigerian public service given ongoing reforms aimed at improving service delivery and institutional efficiency. The study adopts a descriptive survey design targeting directors, deputy directors, and unit heads across five federal ministries. A sample of 150 respondents was selected using stratified sampling, and data were collected through structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression were used for data analysis. Results indicate that strategic leaders who articulate clear organizational vision and align human resource practices with institutional goals achieve measurably higher levels of employee output. The study finds that transformational leadership behaviors, including intellectual stimulation and individualized consideration, are positively correlated with staff motivation and productivity. However, bureaucratic structures and policy inconsistency are identified as significant constraints on strategic leadership effectiveness. The study concludes that public sector organizations in Abuja must cultivate strategic leadership competencies at the senior management level to sustain reform gains. Recommendations include mandatory leadership development programs and performance-linked incentive systems. Keywords: strategic leadership, employee productivity, public sector, Abuja, transformational leadership.
