Strategic Pricing in Nigerian Competitive Markets: A Case Study of the Telecommunications Industry

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates strategic pricing practices in competitive Nigerian markets, using the telecommunications industry as a primary case, with evidence from operators' pricing strategies analysed across networks serving predominantly North West and South West Nigerian markets. The telecoms sector presents one of the most dynamic pricing environments in Nigeria, characterised by rapid tariff adjustments, data bundle innovations, and promotional pricing battles among four major network operators. Understanding strategic pricing decision-making in this context offers broader insights applicable to other competitive Nigerian industries. The research employs a document analysis and expert interview approach, reviewing pricing announcements, tariff schedules, and regulatory filings from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), supplemented by interviews with 25 senior marketing and pricing strategy managers from telecoms firms. Interview data are coded thematically, and document analysis employs content analysis techniques. The study evaluates pricing strategy dimensions including value-based pricing, competitive parity pricing, penetration pricing, and yield management, assessing their adoption patterns and competitive outcomes. Preliminary findings indicate that penetration pricing for data products has been the dominant strategy driving subscriber acquisition, while value-based pricing is emerging for enterprise and premium consumer segments. Regulatory pricing floors are identified as a significant constraint on competitive pricing freedom. Recommendations address telecoms pricing strategists, the NCC, and competitive intelligence teams on developing pricing frameworks that sustain competitive position while managing regulatory compliance.
