📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The history of metallurgical technology in pre-colonial Africa presents some of the most intellectually challenging questions in the global archaeology of technology, encompassing debates about independent invention, technology transfer, and the socially embedded conditions that enable or constrain technological innovation. This dissertation uses the Nigerian evidence to develop an original contribution to the theory of metallurgical technology transfer and innovation in pre-colonial Africa, integrating new archaeometallurgical analyses with critical theoretical engagement with chaîne opératoire theory, innovation studies, and science and technology studies. Empirical programmes at iron and copper smelting sites across Nigeria's three major metallurgical traditions, encompassing the Nok and Taruga early iron zone, the Middle Niger copper tradition, and the Benin bronze casting tradition, employ slag composition analysis, furnace architectural description, experimental replication, and radiocarbon chronology to characterize technological sequences in each tradition. Comparative analysis across traditions using a newly developed technology interaction index reveals complex patterns of both technological sharing and independent parallel development that defy simple diffusionist or isolationist models. A theoretical model of distributed metallurgical innovation is proposed, in which technological knowledge was maintained in a distributed network of specialist communities who shared core principles while independently developing distinctive technical solutions to local raw material and ecological constraints. This model predicts specific patterns of geochemical variation in slag assemblages that are tested against the empirical data, yielding broadly supportive results. The dissertation makes a substantive original contribution to both Nigerian archaeological knowledge and global technology theory. Keywords: metallurgy, technology transfer, innovation, archaeometallurgy, pre-colonial Africa.
