The Psychology of Aesthetic Perception Among Nigerian Audiences: Empirical Aesthetics and Cultural Context

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Empirical aesthetics has developed a significant body of knowledge about how aesthetic responses are shaped by perceptual, cognitive, and emotional processes, yet this literature has been produced overwhelmingly in Western laboratory contexts with Western participants, leaving fundamental questions about the universality and cultural specificity of aesthetic response unresolved. This study applies empirical aesthetics methodology to investigate aesthetic perception among Nigerian audiences, examining how cultural background, educational experience, and visual culture context shape responses to visual artworks. The theoretical contribution is a culturally contextualised model of aesthetic perception that distinguishes between perceptual components that may be relatively universal and cultural components that require context-specific calibration, addressing the deficit in non-Western empirical aesthetics evidence. The empirical component employs a large-scale mixed-methods study combining psychophysiological measurement of responses to carefully selected artworks, validated aesthetic response questionnaires, and qualitative retrospective interviews with 400 participants drawn from Lagos, Kano, Enugu, and Maiduguri, ensuring geographic, ethnic, educational, and gender diversity. The study compares responses to traditional Nigerian artworks, Euro-American modernist works, and contemporary Nigerian art across participant subgroups. The theoretical framework integrates empirical aesthetics, cross-cultural psychology, neuroaesthetics, and the cultural context of perception literature. A key methodological innovation is the development of culturally adapted aesthetic response instruments validated for Nigerian populations. Findings contribute to empirical aesthetics, cross-cultural psychology, and art education by providing the first large-scale empirical aesthetics study grounded in Nigerian cultural contexts. Keywords: empirical aesthetics, aesthetic perception, Nigerian audiences, cross-cultural aesthetics, visual response
