Towards a Theory of Nigerian Aesthetics: Philosophical Foundations, Empirical Evidence, and Critical Applications

The project of developing a specifically Nigerian aesthetic theory, one that draws on the philosophical resources embedded in Nigerian cultural traditions while engaging critically with global aesthetic discourse, constitutes a significant and largely unachieved intellectual ambition in Nigerian art scholarship. This study advances this project by developing an original theoretical system for Nigerian aesthetics, constructing its foundations through systematic philosophical analysis and testing its critical applications through engagement with visual art production across the country. The theoretical contribution is a multi-layered aesthetic theory that operates at three levels: a philosophical level articulating the fundamental ontological and epistemological commitments of Nigerian aesthetic traditions, a critical level providing evaluative categories for assessing works in relation to culturally specific standards of excellence, and an applied level demonstrating how the theory generates original interpretations of specific artworks that supplement or challenge existing critical accounts. The philosophical foundations are constructed through engagement with primary sources in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa-Fulani, Edo, and Ijaw aesthetic philosophy, supplemented by the oral testimony of cultural philosophers, artists, and custodians gathered through fieldwork in each cultural zone. The theoretical framework engages critically with the philosophy of art including analytic aesthetics, continental aesthetic philosophy, and African philosophy of aesthetics. The empirical applications test the theory's critical productivity through readings of twenty works spanning traditional, modernist, and contemporary Nigerian art. The study acknowledges the tension between the diversity of Nigerian cultural traditions and the project of constructing a unified theoretical system, addressing this tension as a constitutive feature of the theory rather than a problem to be resolved. Findings represent a major original contribution to African aesthetic philosophy and Nigerian art theory.
