📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the relationship between German language proficiency and employment opportunities within the tourism and hospitality sector in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. The rapid expansion of international tourism in Lagos has created increasing demand for multilingual professionals capable of communicating effectively with German-speaking visitors. Despite this demand, empirical evidence linking language competency to actual employment outcomes within Nigerian tourism enterprises remains limited. Drawing on survey data collected from 200 tourism industry workers and employers in Lagos, the study adopts a descriptive research design to assess the extent to which German language skills influence hiring decisions, salary structures, and career progression. A structured questionnaire was used as the primary data collection instrument, and data were analysed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Preliminary findings suggest that employers in high-end hospitality establishments value German language ability as a differentiating factor when selecting candidates for guest-facing roles. The study also explores barriers to German language acquisition among Nigerian graduates, including limited access to quality instruction and inadequate institutional support. Recommendations are directed at curriculum developers, tourism boards, and tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The research contributes to ongoing discussions about the economic utility of foreign language education in Nigeria and offers practical guidance for aligning language training programmes with labour market needs. Keywords: German language, tourism employment, Lagos State, multilingualism, hospitality sector.
