Towards a Theory of African Urban Origins: Archaeological Evidence from the Yoruba City-State Tradition

Theories of urban origins in Africa have historically been dominated by diffusionist models that attribute urbanism to external stimulus from the Mediterranean or Nile Valley worlds, yet growing archaeological evidence from West Africa supports the indigenous development of urban forms in the first and second millennia CE. This research develops an original theoretical framework for African urban origins applied specifically to the Yoruba city-state tradition of southwestern Nigeria, drawing on new excavation data, spatial analysis, and critical engagement with world systems theory, social complexity theory, and recent Africanist urban archaeology scholarship. The study synthesizes excavation data from six Yoruba urban sites in Oyo, Osun, and Ekiti states alongside a comprehensive comparative spatial analysis of over forty documented pre-colonial settlement plans, arguing that Yoruba urbanism developed through a distinctive pathway characterized by the aggregation of semi-autonomous lineage compounds within ceremonially defined spatial frameworks, rather than through the hydraulic or administrative concentration processes associated with Old World urban origins models. Original contributions include: a revised typological classification of Yoruba settlement types from village to metropolis; a proposed urbanization coefficient calibrated to pre-colonial West African site data; and a new model of Yoruba political economy in which surplus extraction and redistribution operated through ceremonial obligation networks rather than direct taxation, with material correlates testable through future excavation programmes. The theoretical framework is deliberately generative, designed to stimulate hypothesis-driven comparative research across West African urban traditions.
