Urban Planning and Housing Challenges in Local Government Areas of Lagos State: A Study of Alimosho

This study examines urban planning challenges and housing deficits in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, Nigeria's most populous local government area and a key component of the South West geopolitical zone's urban landscape. Rapid population growth, informal settlement expansion, inadequate infrastructure, and poor enforcement of building codes have created a housing and planning crisis in Alimosho that poses significant developmental and health risks to millions of residents. A descriptive survey design is adopted, with data collected from 250 respondents comprising residents of informal settlements, estate developers, urban planners, and local government officials. The Urban Political Economy Theory and the Housing Rights Framework provide the conceptual structure. Secondary data includes Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning Authority reports, National Housing Fund data, and recent academic literature on urban governance in Lagos. Descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis are employed. Findings are expected to reveal that planning authority fragmentation, inadequate resettlement policies, and corruption in building permit processes are major contributors to the housing crisis. Recommendations include a comprehensive local urban renewal strategy, digitization of planning records, strengthening of local government development control authority, and targeted affordable housing schemes for low-income communities in Alimosho.
