Assessment of Postharvest Handling Practices and Associated Losses Among Tomato Traders in Kaduna Central Market, Kaduna State

Tomato is one of the most economically important horticultural crops in Nigeria, yet postharvest losses from farm to market represent a significant threat to income and food availability. This study assessed postharvest handling practices and associated losses among tomato traders in Kaduna Central Market, Kaduna State, North West Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with 160 tomato traders interviewed using structured questionnaires and direct observation checklists. Loss assessment was conducted at the point of sale over a four-week period, estimating percentage weight loss due to physical damage, disease, and environmental factors. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Findings revealed that the majority of traders relied on bamboo baskets and open sacks for transportation and storage, which contributed significantly to mechanical injury and bruising. Losses averaged 28 percent of total stock during peak trading periods, with higher losses recorded during the rainy season. Temperature management and cold storage facilities were virtually absent in the market. Traders with longer experience in the trade demonstrated slightly better handling practices. The study recommends the provision of subsidised crates and shade structures at market stalls, as well as training on improved postharvest handling by agricultural extension agents.
