The Role of Office Technology in Enhancing Administrative Efficiency in Kano State Civil Service

This study investigates the role of office technology in enhancing administrative efficiency within the Kano State Civil Service Commission. As state governments across Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone intensify efforts to modernize public administration, the deployment of office technologies such as word processors, electronic filing systems, and video conferencing tools has gained increasing attention. Using a descriptive research design, the study targets administrative officers, executive secretaries, and ICT support staff across five selected directorates. Data are collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The study is framed within recent literature on e-governance and office automation, with particular reference to studies published between 2020 and 2024. Preliminary observations suggest that while office equipment is available in most directorates, optimal utilization remains low due to inadequate training and maintenance challenges. The study measures efficiency across dimensions including turnaround time for correspondence, document retrieval speed, and staff output. The findings aim to provide evidence-based recommendations for technology investment and training policy in the Kano State Civil Service. This research contributes to the body of knowledge on office management in Nigerian subnational governments.
