📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study appraises the implementation and effectiveness of electronic document management systems (EDMS) in the regional offices of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, within Nigeria's South South geopolitical zone. The oil and gas sector generates enormous volumes of operational, regulatory, and administrative documents, making efficient document management a critical organisational priority. The study uses a descriptive case study design, targeting document controllers, ICT officers, and administrative managers in three NNPC regional departments. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires and system performance observation guides. Relevant literature from 2020 to 2024 highlights that EDMS adoption in the Nigerian petroleum sector has been uneven, with implementation challenges including data security concerns and inadequate staff training. The study specifically evaluates system accessibility, retrieval speed, data integrity, and user satisfaction levels. Gaps between policy mandates and practical EDMS usage are also examined. Recommendations are aimed at NNPC management and the Department of Petroleum Resources. This study contributes to the discourse on information governance in Nigeria's extractive industry. Keywords: electronic document management, NNPC, Port Harcourt, oil sector, information governance
