Assessment of Children’s Play Space Provision in High-Density Residential Areas of Kano

Play space for children is a fundamental component of healthy residential environments, contributing to physical development, social skills formation, and psychological wellbeing, yet its provision in high-density Nigerian urban areas is severely limited and under-examined. This study assesses the quantity, quality, and accessibility of children's play spaces in four high-density residential quarters of Kano: Fagge, Gwale, Kofar Wambai, and Tudun Wada. Physical audits of existing play spaces documented equipment provision, surface safety, shade availability, enclosure and security, maintenance condition, and inclusive accessibility for children with disabilities. Household interviews with eighty parents and caregivers collected data on children's play patterns, perceived barriers to outdoor play, and priorities for improvement. Spatial analysis quantified play space provision per child resident against NPFA and WHO minimum standards. Results demonstrate a severe shortfall, with provision averaging 0.3 square metres of dedicated play space per child against the recommended minimum of ten square metres. Eighty-seven percent of audited play spaces showed equipment in poor or absent condition. Unpaved, unshaded, and unsecured vacant plots were appropriated as de facto play areas by children in all four quarters. Parents cited traffic safety, crime, and lack of shade as primary barriers to outdoor play. The study recommends a targeted play space retrofit programme for each quarter, co-designed with children and caregivers, as a priority investment for the Kano State Urban Development Authority, with funding linked to the Federal Government's community infrastructure grant programme.
