Documentation of Igbo Obi (Ancestral Hall) Architecture in Awka, Anambra State

The Obi, a central ancestral hall forming the nucleus of the traditional Igbo compound, embodies a rich fusion of social organisation, cosmological belief, and environmental design intelligence that is under severe threat from rapid replacement by modern construction forms. This study documents the architectural characteristics of surviving Obi structures in Awka and its immediate rural environs in Anambra State, focusing on spatial organisation, structural system, material palette, decorative traditions, and environmental performance. Field documentation involved measured drawings, photographic recording, and structured interviews with twenty-five compound heads and ten master craftsmen retaining knowledge of Obi construction traditions. Twenty-three Obi structures of varying ages and states of preservation were documented. Analysis examines the relationship between the Obi's forward-facing seated orientation, the spatial hierarchy from public entrance veranda through semi-private meeting space to sacred inner chamber, and the social governance functions served by this spatial sequence. The transition from palm-thatch to corrugated iron roofing, and from mud to sandcrete walls, is documented as the most prevalent form of incremental transformation. Environmental performance measurements reveal that surviving traditional Obi structures maintain indoor temperatures 2.9 degrees Celsius cooler than adjacent modern structures on the same compound, attributable to thermal mass properties of mud walls and the aerodynamic form of traditional thatched roofing. The study recommends that the documentation archive be deposited with the Anambra State Culture and Heritage Commission, and that Obi spatial principles be studied as precedents for socially grounded contemporary Igbo domestic design.
