📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Workplace noise is a significant occupational health concern and a productivity impairment factor in office environments, and the acoustic design quality of commercial office buildings in high-traffic urban centres like Victoria Island, Lagos, warrants systematic investigation. This study investigates ambient noise levels and the acoustic design provisions of ten commercial office buildings in Victoria Island, Lagos, relating measured noise conditions to building design characteristics and occupant-reported comfort. Sound pressure level measurements were conducted at each building's workstations using a calibrated Class 1 sound level meter over measurement periods of thirty minutes at morning, midday, and afternoon sessions on weekdays. Building envelope construction details, glazing specifications, floor plan configurations, and mechanical services acoustic provisions were documented. Tenant surveys administered to one hundred and fifty office workers collected noise disturbance ratings and self-reported productivity effects of noise. Results show that average workplace A-weighted noise levels ranged from 46 to 68 dB(A) across the ten buildings, with six buildings exceeding the WHO guideline of 50 dB(A) for office work. Buildings located on street frontages facing major arterial roads showed the highest facade noise intrusion, with double-glazed installations performing significantly better than single-glazed equivalents. Open-plan office configurations were strongly associated with higher perceived noise disturbance scores among occupants compared to cellular office arrangements, even when measured noise levels were comparable. The study recommends acoustic specifications for commercial office buildings in Lagos's high-noise-exposure zones and advocates for acoustic impact assessment as part of Victoria Island building permit applications. Keywords: noise pollution, acoustic design, office buildings, Victoria Island, Lagos.
