Evaluation of Market Square Spatial Design in Traditional Settlements of Ekiti State

The market square in Ekiti traditional settlements is a multifunctional social, commercial, and ceremonial space that has historically served as the civic heart of community life. Its design characteristics, current condition, and continued relevance in contemporary Ekiti towns merit systematic documentation and analysis. This study evaluates the spatial design, usage patterns, and conservation status of market squares in six traditional town centres in Ekiti State: Ado-Ekiti, Ikole, Efon Alaaye, Ise-Ekiti, Ijero, and Omuo. A case study methodology combined spatial analysis of square dimensions and enclosure quality, physical documentation of permanent structures, tree canopy, and infrastructure elements, observation of usage patterns during market and non-market days, and oral interviews with twenty town union members and market leaders per town. Results show significant variation in spatial quality, with Ado-Ekiti and Ijero retaining the clearest legible square form and highest activity diversity, while Ikole and Ise-Ekiti show advanced encroachment by permanent commercial stalls that have reduced the central open area to fragmented corridors. Trees in town squares are critically important to their environmental comfort and cultural significance, with shaded meeting areas under large iroko or oji trees functioning as de facto civic chambers. Ceremonial usage continues at all six sites but has been significantly compressed into smaller areas. The study recommends a market square restoration and management programme for Ekiti State, protecting remaining open space, managing commercial infill, and maintaining ceremonial shade trees as protected heritage elements.
