Chinese Investment in the Nigerian Textile Industry: A Case Study of Kano State

The growing presence of Chinese textile investors in Kano State has significantly altered the landscape of North West Nigeria's manufacturing sector. This study examines the scope, nature, and socioeconomic impacts of Chinese investment in Kano's textile industry, focusing on business operations, employment generation, and community relations. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data collected through structured questionnaires administered to 120 workers in five Chinese-owned textile firms and semi-structured interviews with local government officials and market traders in Kano Municipal and Fagge Local Government Areas. The study finds that Chinese textile investments in Kano have created approximately 3,400 direct jobs, though the majority of skilled and managerial positions are occupied by Chinese nationals. Local traders report intensified price competition with Chinese manufactured fabrics, leading to displacement of small-scale producers. Cultural communication barriers between Chinese managers and Nigerian workers were identified as a significant operational challenge. However, respondents acknowledged technology transfer through on-the-job training as a positive development. The study concludes that Chinese textile investment in Kano generates measurable economic benefits but is accompanied by structural inequities that limit Nigerian participation in value-added activities. Recommendations include government policy frameworks mandating localisation of managerial roles and structured knowledge transfer programmes, as well as Mandarin language training incentives for Nigerian workers employed in Chinese firms across the North West zone.
