📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Chinese technology companies including Transsion Holdings, OPay, and PalmPay have established significant operational footprints in Lagos, creating employment opportunities for young Nigerians in sales, customer service, software support, and logistics. This study examines the scale, nature, and quality of youth employment generated by Chinese technology companies in Lagos State. A survey design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 250 young Nigerian employees aged 18 to 35 of five Chinese technology companies operating in Lagos, supplemented by interviews with ten HR managers and five labour union representatives. Results indicate that entry-level roles in sales and distribution are the most common positions offered to Nigerian youth, representing 68 percent of local employment. Career progression into technical and managerial roles is possible but achieved by fewer than 15 percent of local employees. Training programmes are provided by 80 percent of the companies surveyed, though duration and depth vary significantly. Salary competitiveness is rated positively by 61 percent of respondents. Work-life balance concerns are raised by 43 percent, citing long working hours and performance pressure. The study concludes that Chinese technology companies in Lagos generate substantial youth employment but must invest more deliberately in structured career pathways for Nigerian staff and transparent promotion criteria to fulfil their stated commitments to Nigerian talent development in the South West zone.
