Spring Festival Celebrations in Kano: Organisation, Participation, and Cultural Significance

The Spring Festival, China's most culturally significant annual celebration, has been introduced to Nigerian cities through the activities of Confucius Institutes, Chinese embassies, and diaspora community associations. This study examines the organisation, participation, and cultural meaning of Spring Festival celebrations in Kano, North West Nigeria, assessing their role in promoting Sino-Nigerian cultural understanding. A descriptive case study design was adopted, drawing on participant observation at Spring Festival events in Kano in 2022 and 2023, interviews with fifteen Nigerian attendees, eight Chinese organisers, and six Kano State cultural officials, as well as documentary analysis of event programmes. Results indicate that Spring Festival events in Kano attract between 300 and 800 participants, with Nigerian attendees outnumbering Chinese participants by approximately three to one. Lion and dragon dances, traditional Chinese cuisine, and calligraphy demonstrations are the most popular activities. Nigerian participants describe the events as informative and entertaining, though few report deepened understanding of the festival's historical significance. Cultural exchange is largely observational rather than participatory. Collaboration with Hausa cultural organisations for joint programming is identified as a significant missed opportunity. The study concludes that Spring Festival celebrations in Kano effectively attract local interest but remain superficial cultural encounters, and recommends deeper intercultural programming that creates space for active Nigerian cultural contribution alongside Chinese traditions.
