Community Attitudes Toward Chinese Nationals in Calabar, Cross River State

Calabar, the capital of Cross River State in the South South geopolitical zone, has hosted a growing Chinese community linked to the Tinapa Free Trade Zone and various infrastructure and commercial projects. This study investigates the attitudes of Calabar residents toward Chinese nationals, examining the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of local reception of the Chinese presence. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 250 Calabar residents from three LGAs: Calabar Municipal, Calabar South, and Akpabuyo. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten community leaders, five Calabar-based Chinese expatriates, and four officials of the Cross River State Investment Promotion Agency. Results indicate generally positive community attitudes, with 65 percent of respondents rating the Chinese presence as beneficial or very beneficial to local economic development. Key positives identified include employment creation, infrastructure improvements, and the perceived reliability of Chinese workers. Concerns include perceived social aloofness of Chinese nationals, noise and waste management issues near construction sites, and suspicions about compliance with local labour laws. Cultural interaction events involving Chinese nationals and Calabar community organisations are viewed favourably as bridges for mutual understanding. The study concludes that Calabar demonstrates a largely welcoming attitude toward Chinese nationals that can be maintained and deepened through structured intercultural engagement programmes and enhanced regulatory compliance by Chinese enterprises in the South South zone.
