China’s Healthcare Investments in Plateau State: Community Perceptions and Outcomes

China has provided agricultural technical assistance and healthcare investment to Nigeria through bilateral aid programmes, with several projects implemented in Plateau State, a predominantly agrarian state in the North Central zone. This study examines community perceptions and reported outcomes associated with Chinese healthcare investments in three Local Government Areas of Plateau State. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 180 community members and interviews conducted with ten healthcare workers, four state health officials, and three representatives of Chinese health organisations operating in the state. Results indicate that Chinese-donated medical equipment has expanded diagnostic capacity in two public hospitals, particularly in laboratory and radiology services. Community satisfaction with Chinese medical missions is high, with 74 percent of respondents rating the care received positively. However, sustainability concerns are prominent, as donated equipment frequently becomes non-functional due to spare parts unavailability and limited Nigerian technician training. Language barriers during medical consultations are identified as a limitation of temporary medical mission deployments. The study concludes that Chinese healthcare investments in Plateau State produce short-term community health benefits but require longer-term capacity-building components to generate sustainable impacts. Recommendations include training Nigerian biomedical engineers to maintain donated equipment and establishing a permanent Sino-Nigerian health cooperation framework for the North Central zone.
